How in the world does one open the plastic spark plug wire retainers on

I give up- was spark plug wires-

VERRRY carefully.
Its most likely a small clip thingy on the side of the retainer. Be very carefull not to break it.
See if you can slide one side sideways... theyt DO NOT like to unclip...brittle as hell.
