any other problems at all? idle too high when cold?
May be the TPS throttle position sensor. may be sticky IAC.. the idle controller
my ford escort does idle high when cold but thought this was the norm could you give me an idea what it should idle at when cold.

no higher than 1500 or so just for a second or two... then gradually down.
Is this by chance a 2.0 litre engine??? They have a very NASTY tendancy to drop #4 exhaust valve seat. If you have a rough idle problem do a compression test. If one cyl is low (likely #4) try tapping the top of the valve with the rocker at zero lift and see if the valve stem "pops" up. If it does it is an almost sure sign you have a loose seat. If it drops far enough to let the piston smack the valve, breaking the seat, about 5 secons of running will have peices of valve seat distributed through at leat 3 of the 4 cyls, totaling the head and pistons.
