i have a focus zetec 1800 while driving the battery light will come on for a few seconds. now it is coming on all the time and the car is stuttering then just stops

Battery light ON means that the battery is not being charged and the necessary current for the car is being drawn from the battery. A faulty alternator or a faulty regulator or blown redressor diodes may be the reason.
