Duratorq diesel failed MOT due to emissions

my '03 Duratoq turbo diesel (1800cc) has just failed it's MOT due to higher than permissable exhaust emissions. i was told that i would be able to remedy this by giving it a good blast in the lower gears (avoiding breaking speed limits) to "clear it out". is it this simple? i want to avoid it failing at the retest (=A320) if poss so can anyone advise if this is a useful strategy? i must admit i do keep my eye on the current MPG indicator on the trip computer and try to drive most economically. should i become more lead-footed?

Best way to quickly lower the emissions would be to dump some Redex Diesel Treatment in the tank, find a quiet road somewhere where you are going to bother anyone and rev the nuts off your engine. You will get worrying clouds of black smoke for a few minutes, but this will fall off as the engine cleans itself out ;)

When you go for the actual retest make sure your engine is nicely warmed up as this also helps a bit.
