my '03 Duaratorq diesel has just failed it's MOT on excessive emissions. i was told that the simple remedy was to give it a good thrashing in the lower gears (avoiding the breaking of speed limits) to clear it out. is it this simple? i don't want to go back for a =A320 re-test and find that this has not done anything to improve the emissions. can anyone advise?

Bottle of Redex diesel in the tank???
You should give a diesel car a good welly on the way to its MOT.....
Nice gentle drive to get the engine warmed up, find a quiet road and floor it to just below the rev-limiter in each gear, obviously obeying any speed limits. Even better is if there's a nice steep hill near you, where you can keep a high engine load and high revs for a while, to get everything warmed up and burn/blow the crap out.
To check it before re-test, with the engine warm, press accelerator straight to the floor, hold it til the engine hits full revs and release. See how much smoke comes out the exhaust. Some smoke is normal, but if it creates a giant cloud of smoke, then it won't pass.
That's my usual technique. Get it warmed through, then drive in 2nd/3rd rather than 4th/5th to blow the soot out.
