perhaps someone can help, my 2.4 GDI mitsubishi spacewagon 1998 failed mot because of the CO emissions.

here are the readings

Fast idle test FAIL engine speed = ---rpm not checked 2350 2650 co level = 0.21% FAIL 0.20 hc level = 95ppm PASS - 200 lambda = 0.99 PASS 0.97 1.03

second Fast idle test FAIL engine speed = ---rpm not checked 2350 2650 co level = 0.14% FAIL 0.20 hc level = 148ppm PASS - 200 lambda - 0.99 PASS 0.97 1.03

Natural idle test FAIL engine speed = ---rpm not checked 2350 2650 co level = 0.67% FAIL 0.30

overall result exhaust emissions test FAIL

I need some idea on what is causing the problems

When was the last time you changed the air filter?

GDI != Diseasel.

These are not the right results for a diesel vehicle, try a different garage that knows a diesel when they test one, ask for a refund from the first garage and report them to VOSA

In news:Xns9740913B1B272adrianachapmanfreeis@204.153.244.170, Adrian wrote something quite bizarre, possibly in an effort to confuddle the world. It went like so;

GDI = Gasoline Direct Injection = Petrol.

one of those mad high pressure DI petrol jobs innit.

Why? They're the right results for a petrol (well, if they were the RIGHT results, it would have passed, but ykwim...)

OK, well if it isn't a diesel, but a petrol with a weird interpretation of GDI .

the second fast idle test passed, the base idle test failed, but the speed was not checked.

Get the idle rpm checked, as if wrong then the co may be wrong.

A check of the air filter is a good idea, likewise the oil breather system.

Only interpretation of it I've ever seen...

Gasoline Direct Injection...

Wrong. It's not a diesel.

Graphic Device Interface is the most common. Usually the DI part would be Direct Injection when used with a vehicle type, but not in this case.

Assuming that there is not a minor problem with the op vehicle, then it will probably need expensive professional diagnosis and repair. An exhaust gas sensor is possible, likewise is it getting up to full proper temperature? as that could give a rich (high co) reading.

Given the lamdas spot on , just for once I'dd actually suspect the cat, they're just under a £100 for the GDi

I think you mean "Right. It's not a diesel".

Changing the airfilter to bring emissions down is usually the quick-fix for diseasels.

yes, and usually applied to diesels.

The message from Conor contains these words:

!= means "not equal to", Conor.

The GDI engines are prone to coking up - fill it with optimax or some other detergent laden cleaning stuff and drive it hard, really very hard, for a while. Take it on a good run...

MOT it again - it doesn't look too far out from them numbers....

Indeed. Because usually direct injection engines are diesels.
