'01 Ranger Fast Idle

Mar 22, 2006 Last reply: 20 years ago 2 Replies

Recently I noticed that my Ranger idles somewhat fast when it is cold (1,300-1,400 RPM). After the engine warms up the idle goes back to normal (800 RPM).

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

The computer.

Um yeah, its called a PCM or powertrain control module. Every vehicle has one, and when the engine is cold it goes to a cold start mode, and has a high idle till the engine reaches a certain temp. Ir is very normal... Expect to see it if the temp is below 40 deg F the first time you start it. If it does it on warm days, then you need to have the comp checked out.
