Check heater core. It may be leaking.
Mike,
The problem is fungus/mildew growing in the a/c heater box and duct system. Ford Dealers stock a high potency deodorizer which is applied using a special sprayer in a well ventilated area. In my opinion it's not the safest method.
Try this first. Buy a can of Clorox disinfectant/deodorizing spray (or Lysol). Open all the windows, turn the a/c on Max air with the fan on high and all vents open. Hold the can under the passenger side dash and spray a mist into the interior air intake. Use short spray mists. You don't want to soak the fan resistor assembly. Turn fan off and allow the vehicle to sit for a few hours. After a few hours turn the fan on high and allow it to run for a few minutes.
Hope this helps,
John

Mildew would not cause "vapor". His heater core is leaking.
Heater core.
is the odor "sweet" smelling?

BTW: breathing that leaking heater-core 'vapor' is not a good thing to do.....bad for the lungs and other associated parts!
Missed the word vapor, my opinion withdrawn, I agree with the heater core diag. Thanks,
John
Oh heck! :/ Are you sure that stuff is compatible with aluminum? Or maybe I should just caution to be sure it doesn't attack aluminum etc first, before using it inside something that's a royal pain to take apart and clean up after. ;) Otherwise sounded like a cool idea. :)
Alvin in AZ (like another asked, does it smell sorta sweet?)
Does it smell like pussy?
