Change trany oil every year To save $$$

For what it cost I think if you change the trany oil every year it will pay off in the long run . I know some one that is a trany repair person and said it one of the best things that you can do to save your trany from burn out , that is one of the things that kills most tranys if you pull a lot with your truck . I agree, especially if its an automatic. Now watch as people claim that we must both own oil wells to change it this often! I think I spent $35 on B&M fluid when we bought my wife's car, changed it again two years later, now it has 140,000 and still works like it did with 50,000 miles.

I've posted more than once:

if it's a 'daily driver', change it every 18-20 k if you use it as a truck, every 12-15 k if you haul heavy loads, every 10-12k if you tow a lot, every 8-10 k

Strange that the 100,000 mile extended Ford Warranty that the dealer gave me with my 2000 F-250 only requires transmission fluid change at

25,000 & 75,000 to not void the warranty. It also only requires 5,000 oil changes with no mention of the type use. I'm now at over 60,000 with at lest 50,000 of that towing with the combined weight of almost 14,000 pounds. I changed the fluid at 25,000 as shown in their paperwork, but it was a flush and complete change, not just that in the pan. The old '86 diesel automatic never had the transmission fluid changed. The only reason I got the 2000 V-10 was the add on parts on the '86 were getting hard to find and were having to be replaced too often, but the drive train was still fine except replacing U joints.

It didn't die near Redmond, OR in July 2001 when others did. ;-) It didn't die near Gander, Newfoundland in July 2002 when others did. ;-) It didn't die down below Mexico City in February when others did. ;-)

It may die around Anchorage, AK, or some place up that way, next August, but I'll be having fun in the free rental car while the Ford dealer repairs or replaces it. BTW, there is free towing included also.

If it does die, I won't mind coming back and telling you, because I am following Ford's maintenance schedule to the letter.

People offer good advice, one is a transmission mechanic, and you not only refuse the advice, you also post defiantly that you WILL not change your ATF more often.

I guess it takes all kinds, even boneheads like yourself. :)

No, it takes people like you that will believe anything that is posted to a newsgroup instead of what the manufacturer has published in their specifications. Then you cry bad product when that product fails because you didn't follow the manufacturers specifications.

Every time you service it, there is a chance of error by the people doing the service, either by installing the wrong product or part, or by not being clean and contaminating what is installed. It's also a huge waist of resources.

1st owned a vehicle in January 1946, I have never had an engine, transmission or rear end fail while away from home. I did have to replace original equipment, non-grease fitting equipped, Ford U-joints in Fresno, CA once though, and had them install joints with grease fittings. That's 57 years without a major auto breakdown on the road, because the bad U-Joints made it to Fresno Ford Trucks.

You see, I drive with care, service as specified, and carry a cell phone and tow insurance, so I don't worry. BTW, if I should have a failure in your town, you'd never see me unless you are in a certified garage. ;-)

Hey, I applaud you for following the mfgr's recommendations for servicing your truck. The majority don't feel the need to service anything until it breaks. OTOH, I believe that today's transmissions are more finicky and prone to early failure than they were 15 years ago. More frequent fluid AND filter changes are relatively cheap insurance. JMO Dave
