I have a 1996 Ford Ranger with the 4.0 liter V6 engine and manual transmission that has developed a pinging sound recently. Because the vehicle has 122,000 miles, I am suspecting that the MAF may need to be cleaned. What is the best thing to clean it with, though? And what about if it is not the MAF that is at fault - where should I look next?

Thanks, John " @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ I'm not familiar with your specific set-up but the first place to look would be the EGR valve as a cause for ping.Very simple to check.Next is the possibility of carbon build-up in the cylinders.A simple compression check on a couple cylinders will reveal this. Since I have never had a vehicle with a MAF meter I can't comment on that issue. Best..........Brian
