Power output of stock head unit on 2000 Ranger

I have a 2000 XLT with the 4-door extended cab and a no-name CD receiver. I listen to a lot of jazz/R&B and the stock system, while adequate, just does not cut it any more. I had pretty much taken it for granted that I would have to replace the head unit to get a decent sound, but according to my old man, the stock unit is a Philco and ought to be pretty decent. I have looked high and low on the Internet, but I cannot find the stats on the stock head unit for my Ranger.

All I have been able to find out is that the stock speakers (there are four, one in each door) are 25 watts apiece... but how much power is the amp putting out? Does it have a preamp (doubtful), in the eventuality of my putting a modest-sized woofer and amp in the back? Is an aftermarket preamp available for it?

Inquiring minds want to know! (Especially if it'll save me $100+....)

Good luck finding that info! It seems to be highly guarded. the radio's are not made by philco, Ford contracts several companies to make radios, including clarion and sony. You can add line output converters to your factory head unit and then plumb them into an amp. Many amps also offer inputs for factory head units. Ford does put premium sound speakers into Rangers but aftermarket replacements are available, although they should probably be amplified.

Sorry; but you have to figure a way to tell your "old man" that he's :

1) Stuck in the 50's 2) Full of sh*t

Yup; Ford and Philco "were" once corporate partners; but that's ancient history now. Philco >> "Ford Aerospace" >> morphs ; mergers; buyouts and such >>

??

Ford buys "head units" from about 7 known vendors.

Bite the bullet; change out the deck .

a good place to start . They may not be the absolute cheapest;but support is fantastic. Personal opinion-- go with a midrange Kenwood CD/MP3/WMV capable head unit. Most are 40watts by 4 ; decent tuner; simple controls; solid reliable ; and you have all the "amp outs" possible.

Don't worry about the "so-called" watt rating on the Ford OEM speakers. That 25W spec is for "dirty audio" . 40watts of clean audio works fine. You just may be surprised at how good they are with a decent feed. You may even find decent bass; most vehicle mfrs now try to "design in" door speakers with tuned plastic enclosures behind.

Going for a subwoof in your cab is a pain ... there just isn't any "good place to put it".

for your model of radio. Most of the Ranger radios were manufactured for Ford by Visteon. See their site at

for their aftermarket products. The speakers are usually the weakest part of the OEM system. Check out

for the speakers that fit your vehicle.
