I have a '93 Ranger with 4.0L OHV. Don't know if '96 was OHV or OHC. The thermostat is right in front, but there are a couple of things in the way. I have had to replace mine twice (for some reason).

Here is what I did.

I loosened/removed the air duct that goes in front of it so I could see better.

The thermostat is held in with three bolts. Two are relatively easy to get to, but the third is a B!*ch.

After you have removed all three bolts and got the housing removed, be sure there is no gasket (o-ring) material left on the housing or the engine side.

I found that purchasing the ford part was helpful for no other reason than the o-ring comes with it and fits better.

Now here is the "jack-leg" part. I discovered that getting the "problem" bolt properly threaded, while holding the housing in place was impossible with my hands. There is just no room there. My solution was to cut a notch in the bolt hole of the thermostat housing (making is a U shape), so I could easily thread the bolt (I don't recall if I added a washer or not), then slide the housing onto it. The other two bolts went on easily.

Afterward I reconnected the hose and air duct. It was not too difficult.

Never had any problems with my modification, and it made things much easier the second time I had to change the thermostat.

I do agree with a previous post. If you haven't changed your coolant in the last couple of years, now would be a good time also.
