What is the difference between light truck tires and car tires?

I have an old Ranger that needs tires and I don't much to spend. Is there a difference between car and lt truck/suv tires?

I guess the question is: Is it ok to use car tires on my Ranger?

I've seen people with those "rubber band" low profile tires on trucks. If it fits the rim, it should be okay. Car tires don't have as tall profile, so your ride may not sit as high. bg

If you are referring to the LT and the P before the metric sizing, YES there is a BIG difference. P refers to Passenger and is a lighter duty tire with better ride at the sacrifice of load capacity. Typically a range from

1-4ply. LT refers to Light Truck and come in a range from 6-12ply and typically are a stiffer tire with higher load capacities. How fast they each wear depends more on the tread pattern and compound. You can get VERY mild tread tires with higher load capacities and versa-visa...

On your Ranger, you should be able to go with a P rated tire easy...UNLESS you haul some decent weight in the back. Ask a trusted shop what would be best for you. But remember, lower priced means cheaper about half the time. Do some homework!!!

You are referring to low profile tires which they do have some specifically designed for trucks. I don't think he is referring to installing 40 series tires as compared to 75 series.

Basically load capacity.

Do you use it as a car or a truck? If you use it as a car, car tires should be OK. If you carry up your vehicles load limit on even a semi-regular basis I would advise against it.

The last set of tires I put on my F-150 were car tires in the same size as the originals. I never haul anything in it, so I didn't worry about it. The load capacity on car tires is generally lower than a light truck tire.
