Check very carefully before doing anything.
I have a '93 Grand Cherokee and adding a hitch just doesn't do what the factory does. In the GC and other models, Jeep changed axle ratios, cooling and wiring BEFORE adding the hitch, the towing package is MUCH more than a hitch.
The Liberty adds a power steering cooler and heavy duty engine cooling along with wiring and a hitch, I'm not sure what else is done but Jeeps are much better off with the factory tow package.
Has anyone had a good experience with an aftermarket reciever and wiring harness for an 07 Liberty that thay would like to share. I am looking to add one soon and would appreciate any places that were very helpful for the purchase. I can install it myself.
I doubt your LIberty is rated to pull anything.
With the tow package the 2007 Liberty is rated up to 5000 lbs.
The OP wants to install the hitch w/o the tow package and as I warned him in an earlier post, it might very well not be practical. Some Jeep tow packages can not be economically added after the vehicle is built as they may involve changing front and rear differential ratios, larger radiators, wiring, etc. Sticking a hitch on a Jeep not equipped properly will certainly reduce the towing capacity and may cause overheating, etc.
I was thinking that also. That's why I quoted the "properly equipped..." disclaimer. What's the old expression? Your mileage may vary... :-)
What nobody asked is what does the OP plan on towing? Probably should have asked that first...
I have a small trailer which is rated for no more that 900 pounds. Most times it will be 300 pounds at most including trailer.
The 2007 Liberty is rated at 3500 as equipped. It has 8.25 Rear Axle. It also has 3.55 Axle Ratio. It has a 6 speed manual transmission. In looking at Jeeps website the tow package is only a Heavy-Duty Cooling Fan Kit for
3.7L Power Tech V6 engines, use for cooling on vehicles without Trailer Tow Packages.
