4.0 my YJ

May 10, 2005 14 Replies

I've got an 89 YJ with the 2.5L. It's got 94k original miles and runs well. I also have an 89 XJ with the 4.0. 138K miles runs well. Both have good

5spds with good clutches and good NP231's.

Is it possible to swap the 4.0 into the wrangler? Will the harnesses interchange? How difficult is this? Can I loose the EFI on the 4.0 and install a carb? Am I crazy?

Thanks..

Carl

I'm in Tacoma, WA. Smog isnt terrible but isnt easy. Hard hard is it to throw a carb on my 4.0?

Carl

why would you put a carb on it?

To avoid all the problems with switching in the computer/EFI.

Yes, they have a webbersite.

How does that compare to the Edelbrock Performer, Bill ?

Folks can swap the 4.0 head onto the 4.2 to give it better valve flow so the intake from a 4.2 with it's stock Weber-Carter carb should fit right on.

You might need to put a fuel regulator on if you have the electric pump for either the stock carb or the other Weber 36/38 folks use.

That stock carb is a great runner when tuned up and it will beat the crap out of the FI for gas mileage. I just did two 200 mile runs fully loaded at 75 plus mph (120+ kph) and still got over 20 US mpg. I can get higher if I go easy on the go pedal. ;-)
