AMC360 swap into a Wrangler ???

Apr 11, 2004 15 Replies

I have a 1990 Wrangler with a 4.2L motor, AX15 Transmission and NV231 transfercase. I also have a 90 Grand Wagoneer with a AMC 360 motor, 727 Automatic transmission and 229 transfer case. I would like to swap the AMC360 into the Wrangler along with its Dana 44s. What is the best, easiest and cheapest way and what would I need for the swap?

Thanks for your help, Pat

I am no expert, but that is a *bunch* of work! You're welcome.

I note that the 727 it comes with is rated M on your chart, same as the AX15. The 360 in its stock form isn't that powerful (145 bhp / 300lb ft), although I gather that putting an edelbrock performer cam/intake/carb ups the power considerably.

On top of that, the 727 with the Dodge bolt pattern was found behind some very powerful engines. The internals of the transmission are the same. And then if you read further down on the list, a Ford E4OD gets an H rating, even though it is known that these things are weak until many of the internal components are upgraded. I personally would take some of the info on the chart with a grain of salt.

Also the AX15 is one of the ones that Novack make the V8 adaptors for, according to them it will hold up behind a V8, although they don't say which V8.

I have a 1990 jeep wrangler with an AMC 360.......a few mod's to get more horses and it does a great job. If you use the 727 trany its bulletproof, bolts up to the 360 and you can bolt up the NP 231 tranfer case to it.....makes your drive shaft very short but workable. You will also have to check clearances on the tranfercase shifter coming thru the floor. Good Luck..........passes everything but gas station...lol because of the wrangler small gas tank. About 12 mpg on the road. If you know the 727 trany it was put behind some of the most powerful muscle car engines...including the 426 HEMI !!

Wow Bill, only $2500 for that tranny including a core???? I think I'm in the wrong business, LOL.

Looks like Im going with the AMC 360 V8, 727 Auto Trans and 231 Transfercase setup. My YJ already has a SYE, RE 4.5" lift and 33x12.50 BFG MTs. Im also going to use the Dana 44s from the Wagoneer on it. What gears would you guys recommend for a daily driver?

mabdjb can you contact me via snipped-for-privacy@NOSPAMhotmail.com? I'd like some more information/pictures on/of your setup. Thanks. Pat

That 727 tranny is a 3-speed right? If so, I'd go with a 4.10 R&P ratio. If you had an overdrive tranny, then 4.56 would be great.
