Another Jeep in the yard

Picked up an 89 Cherokee the other day, 4.0, Auto, 4 inch Skyjacker lift, power everything, bad clearcoat (any ideas?) towing package, 35K on reman engine and then it got all new hoses, pump, rad, etc., the number I called after my wife found it (it's hers now) turned out to be a mechanic i know, so im pretty sure he told me straight what it history was.

This Renix FI system, doesn't throw codes, does it? I don't have a Vantage meter or equilvallent to read the datastream

No codes, just multimeter tests.

If the gas mileage is low, check the O2 sensor with Chrysler. The Renix ones are all under recall, so if it hasn't been performed you can get a new one free.

The old Renix system works really well and gives us and others we know

25+ mpg on the highway with a combined 18 or so. Our city driving is all cold though. The defrost barely has time to kick in before my wife gets to work.

When I bought both of my Cherokee's, they were puking oil into the air filters. Both just had a plugged up CCV tube. If I clean that every couple years, it keeps the air filters oil free.

My previous Cherokee was an `89 4.0/auto, loved it. Great little wagon that I ran from about 90K to about 225K miles.

  • The headliner will fall because the foam layer between the fiberglas liner and the fabric will rot (Google my name in this group plus "headliner" for do-it-yourself low-buck fix instructions).

  • The radio will probably not work (do radios /ever/ work in Cherokees?) no matter what you do.

  • The "rocking" feature for the front seats probably never worked.

  • What Mike said about keeping the CCV system clean: If you don't clean it regularly it _will_ puke oil. Google my name in this group plus "CCV" or "part number" for the replacement part numbers. The last time I bought them the counter guy and I had to back them in through the paper catalogue.

  • My XJ liked to occasionally do this little lock/unlock/lock dance with the torque converter, but only when feathering off the gas and only during hot weather and I never did get it worked out, go figure.

  • The failed paint is a known "feature" for Cherokees from that era, especially the right side of the hood, and it goes all the way to the metal. It was from Chrysler changing over to low-VOC paint and saving dimes by omitting an intermediate primer layer that was later found to be serving as a sunscreen for the base layer.

  • The transfer case indicator lights don't have much to do with reality.

Others have warned about the foot wells rotting through but even here in salty New England I never had a problem with that, just the usual bottom edges of the doors and rear quarter panels.

LOL!

Ok... You sure are describing my Cherokees.... Both radios, both headliners (the directions in the link worked great, thanks), paint, TC lights... Hey, my seats rock though!

Watch for rust in the drivers side floorboards...

The paint is an eighties thing. Your lucky if it doesn't all peel off. I have seen some pretty interesting looking vehicles, like an Astro van, where the top paint had peeled off, leaving it looking like it had primer colored flames on the front third of the vehicle.

If you want to repaint the vehicle, there are come "catalyzing primers" that might save you the trouble of stripping it all off.

Thanks guys. I have worked on a few of these, but European cars and antiques are my specialty. All normal stuff for the rig, bad rear lift struts even has the rattling back hatch hinges, but no rust. It seems to bump-steer or maybe need a steering box brace, I havent looked to see if they installed a drop pitman arm yet. The paint will probably stay the way it is. It has 85K miles on it, the guy I got it from got it from the original owner who tried to drive on a bad waterpumnp and smoked the engine at 50K miles, so he took it and installed the reman engine

Kate, i was looking at the license plate today, "2MUL3xx", it is now known as the "the Mule". lol
