broken bolt in frame

The bolt underneath the rear crossmember broke. So I hit it with a punch so I could drill it out but then nut that was welded inside the frame popped out. DOH!~

I'm installing a rear bumper and that hole is one of the mounting points.

Anyone ever use a self tapping bolt with successs in the frame?

I was thinking of this instead of paying someone to weld a bolt into the hole so I can mount the bumper

Any ideas and thoughts are much appreciated.

You could just get a new nutsert for it. I have tapped into my xj "frame" successfully but a nutsert is an easier better fix. KH

I wasn't impressed with the frame strength on my MJ when I put the tow hooks on the rear so I punched out the nutserts and slid a lenght of

3/8 inch strap in, marked the holes, then pulled it to drill and tap the holes. Now the whole section of the frame is braced with that 3/8 backing plate and I have no qualms about yanking away (plus the bumper isn't likely to get pulled off). I just don't like those nutserts, myself.

Thanks for the input all

I ended up drilling a hole in the frame large enough to get a bolt and wrench head on

Will one day have it welded closed. For now painted the area with POR
