Busted window on my XJ

Jun 22, 2006 25 Replies

Hi folks,

I'm very much a non-expert on all things Jeep (the horror, I know) and a 21-year old girl, so please be kind as I ask this dumb question!

My 98 XJ Sport got broken into yesterday - they broke the front passenger side window completely out, stole the radio, and busted off the rearview mirror. I can definitely fix the mirror and radio myself (will have to check it out to see if I can just pop the front panel back on, but I was hoping you fine people would be able to tell me what to expect in going somewhere to get my window replaced.

How much is it reasonable to expect it to cost? Are there any specific questions I should ask? Basically, what does a not-great-with-cars girl need to know when taking her car in to get the automatic window replaced?

Thanks a ton, Ashley

Your insurance should cover it, if not you should consider changing your policy to add coverage. Many companies will cover glass breakage with no deductable.

Check to see if you have comprehensive on your insurance policy. Most glass replacement is done with no deductable.

Replac> Hi folks,

That being said replacing the glass is a straightforward operation.

You can buy the glass new or from a junk yard.

DOOR GLASS

REMOVAL

(1) Remove the door trim panel.

(2) Remove the waterdam.

(3) Remove inner and outer belt weatherstrip.

(4) Roll glass up to expose the bolts attaching the

glass to the regulator.

(5) Remove the bolts attaching the glass to the

regulator (Fig. 2).

(6) Lift the glass upward and out of the door.

INSTALLATION

(1) Position the glass in the door.

(2) Install the bolts attaching the glass to the regulator

Tighten the bolts to 4 N·m (36 in-lbs) torque.

(3) Install inner and outer belt weatherstrip.

(4) Attach the door waterdam to the door inner

panel with adhesive/sealant.

(5) Install the waterdam.

(6) Install the door trim panel.

Not for glass breakage, that's 0 deductable on many policies or if it isn't it's usually much less than the regular comprehensive deductable.

GEICO, and it costs WAY more than $300/year but that depends on the cars and the areas in which you live. I could reduce my insurance by

30% if I wanted to move from Phoenix to Bisbee...

If you don't have 0 deductable glass insurance, shop around. Who knows, there might be something better out there.

Ashley, sorry to hear that your righ got broken into. One thing I would like to add to allof the sage advice that the men folk here have offered is this:

Thieves are known to watch a vehicle that they have broken into. They know that the vehicle will have the stereo replaced in it so they keep an eye on it and when the new one goes in, often an upgrade, they come and steal that one too.

I say tie a rottweiler to each bumper and keep them a little hungry.

Good luck kid.

Kate

Then your insurance sucks. Have had windshields replaced on two vehicles recently with 100% coverage.

That's meaningless w/o knowing the limits of your insurance, the vehicle(s) insured and the zip code in which you live. Your $300 could be doubled or more for the same vehicle, same coverage, same insurance company if you lived in a different area.

I never open your links, Bill. I made the mistake of doing it once and found myself looking at your face. I couldn't eat for two days!

The billing explains the price you're paying.. Buy something worth more and see what happens to the premiums!

BTW, WHAT was the stupidest questions your ever were asked? I didn't ask any questions.

Looks like we're both guilty of not reading.

No, his insurance does not suck. He probably saves enough to replace the glass on his car at least once a year... I got a quote from them and they offered better protection for less than AAA. They did not beat USAA, but then, not everyone is elegible for USAA...

Kate makes a good point. It may be time to upgrade the alarm along with the stereo...

Most companies are less than AAA, there's nothing cheap about their rates.

Who is Wawanesa? Licensed for Kalifornia?

I used to have Farmers, but I may be one of the few drivers that owned not only a heavily modified 427 Chev and a Porsche and my rates went DOWN when I got a divorce. Something about the Ex's driving capabilities seemed to scare the crap out of Farmers more than all that horsepower--and this was during the anti-horsepower era.
