jeep sport liberty

Sorry if this is wrong newsgroup for posting this message. I need a fairly small vehicle, that has got to get me to work everyday without fail no matter the weather. I live in the northeast, but not too far north(one of the mid atlantic states). We can get heavy snow, sleet and rain. I have looked at the rav 4 , and the jeep liberty. I am looking at the automatic trannie only. I am leaning towards the liberty sport because of the greater room behind the front seats, for storing gear. I have test driven them both, but only in city driving, couldnt get the dealership to get to a highway with them.(but that is another story)

1) The rav four seemed excellent in fit and finish. The engine seemed smooth and the car felt great, except its a little cramped for space.

2) The jeep engine felt sound, but not as refined. The car also felt to not handle as well .

Questions: From your experiences, what has the dependibility of newer jeep liberty

4wd vehicles have been? I cant afford to have a vehicle that is constantly in the shop. If I dont get to work on time, It is serious.

Is the highway driving that bad? From reading reviews they talk about the stiff drive, because the jeep is also a serious off roader, and thus comprimised. I am willing to compromise a bit, because when it snows and sleets at three in the mourning, I have no choice but to be in the vehicle driving to or from work. I do like the jeeps rear room.

So any actual experiences would be appreciated. One other reason is that the wife actually likes the way the jeep fits her body. She is short, and she also likes the visibility on the jeep.

This is a tough decision. I have a parking situation at work, thus I cant bring my larger suv to work. Looked at the honda crv, and the pedals are too far away for wife.

So please help me out..LOL

Thanks in advance

I am in the UK and own a Diesel auto Liberty, which you don't get until later this year. I can't fault the car at all, however we don't get much snow over here so can't really tell you how good it is!! I looked at the RAV4 but they are pretty common over here whereas the Liberty is just a bit different. The other one you might consider is the Land Rover Freelander, though it's not such a high driving position.

All you have to do is add God Bless America Bill to your kill file - I did that quite a while back. He is usually a total waste of bandwidth. Don't bother swearing at him - it's undignified.

This is the right group for your Jeep questions.

I have been paying attention to the Liberty as far as complaints go for reliable and so far there have been no inherent issues that have been posted on the usenet Jeep groups I frequent.

It has decent clearance, still drives like the small truck Jeeps are supposed to be and from what I have heard from folks that wheel them in

4x4, have just as well a behaved 4x4 as any Jeep.

It 'isn't' a car.

Jeeps have the sweetest, most well behaved 4x4 of any off road truck I have ever seen or driven in and I have been bush running since the 70's.

Jeeps also let you know 'real' fast if you are going to fast for conditions, they get twitchy. Well, when a Jeep gets twitchy, check the stopping distance, it won't easily let you outdrive the stopping power, but it still can...

I love the shift on the fly 4x4 because I am in Canada and had a shift that got off at 4 AM well before the plows are out. I also 'had' to be to work. The newspapers must go out! It was a 20 mile uphill drive home and being able to just hit 4x4 when I saw blowing snow ahead and drop out when I saw clear without changing speed is nice.

My $0.02 for you,

Mike

It has the Jeep label, same as the TJ.

Time to get used to it too, attnews. ;-)

The Liberty is a JEEP as any other one. His goal is not exactly the same as a TJ but it still a JEEP. lol

You have to realize that some people here consider the Liberty such an abomination that asking even intelligent questions about it is, in their definition, trolling. Been there, done that.

Ignore them. This is not rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys.pre-1987. I'd personally never buy a Liberty, but judging by the number I see on the road a lot of people are.

Thanks to all that have responded to me on group and directly. Its difficult sometimes making a decision, especially on something that cost 20,000 plus dollars, and something that you have to depend on day in and day out. I am in law enforcement and in the military, and thus need to get to work, no matter the conditions and need to stow gear and buddies sometimes, so dependability, space, and rugeddness in that order is whats important to me. I know the toyota quality having had two of them, and loving them. I also love my 13 year old dodge caravan with close to 200,00 on the odometer. I went with my spouse today, to sit in the jeep on the showroom floor again. She is a new driver(we are in our forties), and she will be driving vehicle occasionaly so it had to suit her also. (Shes the commanding officer at home, LOL ) She really likes both the rav4 and the toyota.I am a bigger guy and find the rav4 a bit small on the "belly room factor" LOL Darn, I wish I had the cash to buy one of each. Still open to more comments and opinions. This car will almost never be taken off road. 98 percent of time will be on paved roads.

Thanks

From someone who loves Jeeps (owned 7 since 1987) and a Toyota 4Runner (1989.....if those were my only two options, and with the usage you describe, I'd get the Rav 4.

That's right only questions billy deems relevant should be in this news group.

That's it from now on only questions about billys jeep because it's the only real one out there, all others are just fakes or wanna be's.

so why suffer in SUV ??? wouldn't any of the AWD cars (like subaru outback) be enough ? IMHO getting SUV to solely drive on pavement doesn't make much sense no matter which side is one looking from.

don't get me wrong - I do have a Liberty. I wouldn't get one if it were to be a city car.

I really don't disagree and still have thoughts of converting my CJ back to points, but life does go on and we are stuck with what big money wants to do whether we like it or not.

The only good thing Chrysler ever did was make a slant 6 and it lasted too good so they killed it.

Why "suffer" in SUV?

1) Personal preference 2) That 2% of the time you go off road 3) Higher seating = better view of road and higher visibility 4) hauling/towing capacity 5) More head/leg room for passengers 6) More options for bad weather/road conditions 7) Larger vehicle mass in collision etc.

The Freelander has a dreadful reliability record, has the ground clearance of a pregnant daschund and is missing a transfer case. Its also more expensive than a 4.0 TJ, and has nothing like the power. That's plenty of objective criticism to balance out the subjective "It's butt ugly as well" :-). I saw one on the M40 motorway recently where the entire front wheel and strut had fallen off - most entertaining.

So it wasn't AMC that designed the YJ with that cheap-ass failure-prone weak French Peugeot BA-10 transmission and it wasn't AMC either that dropped the Dana 44 and began using that weak Dana 35c tranny??? It was Chrysler that at least brought the venerable Dana 44 rear axle back and made it available again and dumped the Peugeot POS tranny in favor of the much stronger AX-15. Sure, AMC was just the most brilliant organization... so brilliant that it's Jeep sales had the most dramatic drop off of almost any vehicle that didn't go belly-up. Chrysler took a failing vehicle that was ready to go belly-up and look at it now... a robust vehicle with the TJ one of the best ever performing off-road Jeeps ever.

Now go crawl back into your hole troll.
