Problem with 4wd slipping out of grinding (05 Rubicon)

Jun 24, 2009 4 Replies

I went wheeling last week on the colorado river. Decided to have some fun in a wash, it was rutted so going was slow. Anyway a few minutes on the wash and bam, transfer case slipped out of 4wd or more likely went up into half neutral etc. I was only going say 5mph, but man what a crunch and grinding. I assume it slipped out because it was just so bouncy or I had not properly engaged it all the way. Anyway, jeep is fine so far, but what type of damage if any do you think I did? I am the paranoid type, but all is well, as I continued on some much rougher stuff with no issues for hours.

If you "continued on some much rougher stuff with no issues for hours" then I wouldn't be concerned about it. I've done that a few times myself by not engaging it properly. It pops out after a few minutes, usually with quite a bang.

Same here. I've banged the transfer case gears a few times myself. 1986 CJ still runs w/ no problem. (Knock on wood).

That's how my Quadratrack shifts from Hi to Lo. :) GuRBuzzz.KLUNK!
