pulling axle shafts w/detroit locker

Jan 21, 2006 12 Replies

I have a 99tj with D44 and a detroit in it. I need to pull the axle shaft to replace the wheel studs. I could use some info on going about this. I cant see where there would be any C clips on the detoit, so I wanted to check with you guys before I start to try to slide hammer the axle out. Been a long time since I was on here. Thanks

Hey John, how's it going?

I am not sure, but can't you just take the drum off and pop the studs out with a C-clamp and large socket to catch the stud or a hand vise and socket? I don't think I would want to hammer them out, but...

My 44's axles also just unbolt from the outside, no slide hammer needed.

Ill go out and try the c-clamp on the studs. I unbolted the retainer plate that holds the brakes on the tube but the shaft is still in there and wont come out.

Thanks

well I got them. I just used some penetrating oil and a sledge and to install i used the impact with a spacer. oh well, I guess that diff oil needed to be changed anyway,it had about 6k on it.

No more White Trash, it fell victim to the somebody made me an offer that at the time was prudent to accept. When the situation improved, I replaced W/T with a 98 GC, but Im not allowed to drive it offroad (but she isnt with me all the time haha) I still have the 99 tj and it now is locked F/R with the atlas t-case and 4.88 gears. My son was driving it about 1.5-2 yrs ago and flopped it on its side, I cried for days.

If you really have a D44, you don't have any c-clips anyway.

Dropped it on it's side. You gotta love the boy ...
