I went to 3 sites and they all recommended crossing them.

I'm not suggesting that cross rotating the tires is a bad idea, I'm suggesting it is unnecessary. If you WANT to cross rotate, then fine, put yourself through the extra work. But if you don't know if you need to cross rotate, the answer is a resounding NO, you do not need to cross rotate. You can safely swap the front and rear tires and keep them on the same side.

As an aside, Most cars these days have that donut-spare that is not meant to be included in the tire rotation scheme, so pulling the tire from the trunk every few months and getting it some road time isn't necessary or even desirable.

Extra work? A 4 tire rotation involves moving 4 tires, crossing or not.

Yes, but the guy at home that is swapping tires around can lift the car on one side and change two tires, then move to the other side and repeat. If there is cross rotation in the mix, then you need at least one additional tire and you have to jack both sides twice. I don't know about you, but I see this as extra work.

Umm, correct me if I am wrong here, but aren't all these folks in the business of 'selling' you new tires?

Pretty hard on their bottom line if your tires don't wear out isn't it.....

You are the one who said not to cross them because they will separate. Do you really think they'd recommend crossing them if it posed a risk of serious tire failure? Did you sleep through the Ford/Firestone debacle?

Well, 'Both' of my owners manuals for 'both' of my Jeeps say to keep the tires on one side and do not cross them so 'I' will do what the owners manual says, not the freaking tire maker who has his own reasons for umm proper 'wear'.

I guess there are stupid people out there that would take the word of the tire 'seller' on the 'best' way to make the tires last the longest rather than the maker of the vehicle.

Oh, there also have been a pile of Jeepers in the last few years and lately that have posted about out of round tires causing the 'death wobble' and other vibrations. Wanna bet they used the tire makers way of rotating??? Our Cherokee even 'came' that way 6 years ago with an almost new set of Hercules tires on it that were freshly rotated. 6 months later, one dead tire with a tread separation or out of round issue. Out of round 'usually' means belt separation eh.
