Around here, we don't screw up our diesel engines by doing stupid stuff

We wore the last one out at 275k miles, it was tired then and had been worked hard. An 88 F250 that was bought new and ran great until we sold it in 04. Even then it ran great but was beginning to lose a little power and show it was getting tired.

Oh hey, I am not in any way bashing them, I would have on ein a minute as a second car, but not as my daily driver. I have been talking to hubs about maybe gettine one, later.... for FUN

Most would like to forget the GM diesels.

It is amazing that no one in the GM engineering department cautioned about possible engine damage caused by increasing compression 2.5 times the design specs of the gasoline engine they used.

Either way it would be nice to see...

The primary problem with GM's Diesel engines of the 1970s was their design ? they were based on Oldsmobile's 350 V8. This gasoline block was unable to withstand the higher cylinder pressures and temperatures of Diesel use. This led to catastrophic failure of pistons, cylinder heads, and even cylinder walls. Reinforced Diesel engines, from GM and other companies, did not have these problems. Today, GM uses Diesel engines from DMAX (for trucks) and Isuzu (for non-US cars) but offers no domestic Diesel passenger cars.

Mercedes Benz sold diesels, but not very many. Peugeot did too then you had VW and Oldsmobile. But none of them burned diesel fuel like the PowerStrokes and Duramaxes and Dodge Ram Cumminses. They are the consumers of diesel fuel, not the piddling few Benzes.

Studebaker and Checker Cab offered diesels too back then. You could get a factory Perkins, I think, in a Lark. Checker Cab had a British Ford engine optional I think. They sold very few, but neither did Benz.

Maybe we should jack truckers' costs to force freight back on the railroads where it belongs anyway.
