Trailer Wiring Problem

Connecting color-to-color is like building an airplane out of bamboo in hopes another will land... cargo-cult electrics. Don't do this again, for anything except house wiring... you're lucky you didn't see smoke.

Unfortunately every vehicle manufacturer uses their own color coding system for trailer wires. This has been a pet peeve of mine for years, but anyway, this should fix you up:

The taillight wires on the trailer harness are brown, they should both go to the green wire on the vehicle. The left turn wire on the trailer is yellow and should go to the red wire on the vehicle. The right turn wire on the trailer is green and should go to the brown wire on the vehicle.

True enough, but the color codes I listed below came directly off the instructions included with the factory pigtail for our Grand Cherokee. The colors do match what the OP listed for his XJ, so I assume they are correct.
