I have a chance to but a 75 CJ-5 rolling chassis for a good price (I think). What axles should be under it? The owner says it has a Dana 44 in the rear, but doesn't know what's in the front. BTW, it has a 304 and 3 speed tranny.

They really must have run out of cash when they decided to use the D35!
I ran into a vintage Jeep club up near Earle's place in Silverton, CO this summer. It was obvious from what they drove they wouldn't touch anything called "Jeep" newer than 1969, and the tank better be under the seat.
Thanks Bill. He didn't know about the front. He thought that it was a 44 too. I can get the chassis, motor, tranny for about $300. Do you think it's worth it to put it in an 85 CJ-7? What will I notice If I put the 304 in place of my 4.2? Will my rebuilt T-5 hold up?

If you look at the cover on the Dana 44, it is shaped like an apple laying on it's side.
As someone else mentioned, the T-5 is strong and used behind the 5.0 Mustang engine. A friend has that 5.0 in his 84, man does it fly!
Just watch 5th gear, it is an overdrive gear and shouldn't be used under load, especially with a V8 loading it... ;-)
The owners manual for my CJ7 even comments not to use 5th when towing or climbing hills with the 4.2 engine.
