Dexron transmission fluid. A little under 2 quarts. Make sure you can get the fill plug out before draining it.

Dexron is ATF, I don't recall ATF being called for in an NP231, but I may be wrong...
Crap, another brain fart, I read it wrong...yes, ATF is correct for the 231.
Thanks guys, I read somewhere it was ATF, but freind who is doing it said he thought it was 80-90 gear oil.

Which year did Jeep specifiy ATF for their five-speed manual trannys?
I assumed nothing, I simply know that any ATF will work in an NP231, it's not as critical as in an automatic transmission. You probably don't want to add Dexron if you have Type F, though. Chrysler's spec is Dexron, if I remember correctly, but it's not critical if it's I, II or III.
I don't think they ever called for whale oil, but I bet it would work.
They called for it in the T5 for 82 and 83 I believe, but by 85 they must have had enough blown up transmissions, that they changed back and called for proper gear oil again. (have an 85 and 86 owners manual)
My 86 calls for gear oil.
