make sure the front hubs are operating. have your mechanic run it on a lift. might be in bad need of lubrication.

the vacuum seals in the front drive hubs need to be replaced. common problem if you haven't used the 4wd in a while. they dry up and the shaft spline won't engage. you didn't say what year your sportage is. in the

98-99, they replace the hubs with a manual one that you have to get out and turn by hand like a switch. In the 2000 and on the seal kit runs about $40 and a couple hours labor.
