I know there is a 'controversy' over 101 ambi MoT's. Summat to do with Class 4 and Class 7. Personally I usually find a few Class A's useful about MoT time...
So, about to try out a local test station. If they start wittering on about it not being a car test, what do I say? Do I care?
Take it to a place that knows the difference. It's not just about passing the 'test' it's about knowing the vehicle *you* are driving is safe enough for a basic set of standards. The roadworthiness is irrelevant if you don't feel safe driving your own car!
What does it say on the V5 - ambulance or camper van, if either of those then show the v5 to the man and ask him to look up exceptions in his testers handbook
Technically I believe its over the limit for a class 7 which is 3.5 tonnes anyway so it would then be a ministry test so the above should be good enough
The dual purpose vehicle that you can get a GS thru on does not apply to ambi's as they are too heavy (I believe the weight limit on that is actual weight on gross)
On the otherhand I could be talking cr*p - its happened before, especially after an evening of beer & chocolate
Phone DoT Bristol and ask to speak to the chief examiner to get a definitve answer. I had a load of crap when I bought a new 110 CSW in '97. I was told by numerous people including the examiner at Tilbury commercial vehicle Dot test centre that it did'nt need an MoT at 12 mths; he even photocopied the relevant bit showing it was a dual purpose vehicle etc. etc. After all that when I went to tax it again at 18 mths old ( 6 + 12 ) I was asked for an MoT as it was a 12 seater !!!! Even though they cannot test the 6 crew seats as they are'nt covered in the regs. Blah blah blah. I still don't know what it is; Kens idiots won't give me exemtion from the C Charge because my V5 does'nt give the seat capacity.
quite frankl I have no idea but in the days when I drove a limo it might have been registered as a private car but no-one had a ramp capable of taking it so I took it to the council to be MOT'd not that it ever failed for tis an anathema for any vehicle of mine ever to fail an MOT :)
