Calling our autobox expert

Sorry to bother you but would you know a place that would sell me a filter and sump gasket for a Torqueflite 727 transmission?

My manual says that a band adjustment should be made at the same time as a filter change - I'm reluctant to do this (even though the book describes very well how to do it) because I worry about buggering it up.

What do you think please?

Julian.

Changing the filter is easy, no real risk of "buggering it up". Just make sure everything is 'clean enough to eat your dinner off' and it'll be just fine. Dirt ingress is what'll kill an auto very very quickly. As for adjusting the brake band, if all is working ok and the oil is clean, then it probably doesn't need adjusting. From experience with older Borg-Warner and Ford autoboxes, the torque figures quoted are normally slightly on the tight side, so if for example the book quotes 12lbft then back off 3 flats, I'd go for 6 lbft and back off 3 flats. For a new filter and gasket, try landrover themselves or someone such as JPAT or even Ashcroft Transmissions. Badger.

Cheers, I'll try those people if google will help me find their details.

The box is bolted to a Mopar 440 (Jensen), so I don't know if Landrover will be of help. Is the Torqueflite box fitted to all sorts of different vehicles? Mine dates back to 1973.

Torqueflite was used on all sorts of cars fitted with yank engines, chrysler mainly, I suggested landrover on the assumption that was what it was fitted to, seeing as this is a landrover newsgroup. There is a possibility that sump pans and filter shapes vary depending on application, what you could do to simplify sourcing the correct item is to find the data plate on the box and make note of the serial number of the gearbox and any other part numbers given. You could also try Real Steel, 01895 440505, they do lots of american autobox stuff. (JPAT sometimes come up in search engines as JP Auto Transmissions) Badger. Badger.
