continuing saga of crap starting rr 200tdi

so far i've pretty much eliminated air in fuel as cause of starting pains but i have found an exhaust leak at manifold gasket, its chuffing away quite badly embarassingly enough, could this contribute to a bad startup, ie taking ages to fire then smokey n underpowered n lumpy till it feels like all cylinders have caught up with each other, all filters new and fuel bled properly. thanks for earlier responses folks, hope someone can come up with more ideas...steve

Are you sure it is the exhaust manifold? Tdi engines are prone to blowing the head gasket straight out the back of the block. This gives a chuffing and a misfire. Sounds exactly like an exhaust blow.

with the engine running put your and between the back of the head and the bulkhead you should feel it chuffing into your hand. It is very rare for them to damage them selves further, A simple head gasket replacement will usually cure.

A leaking exhaust manifold will have no effect to the running of the engine as you describe it.

Hope this helps

exhaust gas coming from front cylinder 1 area, also seems one stud missing! if gasket is leaking exhaust gas could it be leaking air into inlet manifold? not had this motor long, my first tdi so still learning...
