Like many (most?) shops, it takes drilling down to a nonsensical level. 7 clicks to get it, and by then theres nothing else in the category. List models, from which select Defender 110, select interior trim, then the item. But that was only one of my criticisms*, which also included awfully rendered graphics, eye-burning colours, terrifyingly poor navigation breadcrumbs, and nonsensical categories. For example, I wanted to see if they were local in case they could do the work for me, and I had to click several links before I found out. Thats nuts, your phone number and general location (or even exact location) should be at the foot of every page. Anyway, this thread didnt start out as a slagging off of Richards site, so lets just assume that hes working on it and it'll get better!

Well that is rather the point! You navigate the tree to arrive at a leaf.
Which will give you a page with somewhere between 500 and 800 parts on it, which really is unusable, not least as LR don't usually group part numbers together it would effectively be a random list to boot!
Seriously, if you can suggest a better way, I'd love to know. I can't see how everthing can be at the root - the Defender section alone represents about 8,000 or so parts. The structure actually is a direct representation of the parts books (well, Microcat actually) with one or two pages merged.
I like the colours I'm affraid - and so to quite a lot of other people, the general colour scheme has been nicked at one time or another by a lot of other LR sites since it started about 6 years ago (on a different domain originaly). Personaly I hate sites with all arty pictures and no content, or just too much extranious info. One LR supplier has so much eye candy and flashy bits on their site that you can't actually find any parts before you die of boredom waiting for the Flash to load - with broadband!
Again, if you can suggest a better way, I'm all ears, and what is a breadcrumb (apart from the obvious!)? I can't think of any other way of categorising a part that was fitted from VIN no. aannnnnn to VIN no. aannnnnn, as, with the partial exception of the introduction Td5 changes are not all at the same time, and not all at a model year change, and anyway, model years are not the same as real years. 1993 model year probably started in mid 1992 (usually, but not always around August - and Discovery's had a 1993 1/2 model year), which would confuse everyone, including me! Again, before I started quoting VIN numbers there were very few to be seen on LR sites, now everyone is using them (including the deliberately introduced errors).
Again, any suggestions? The parts books use of vehicle->assembly->sub- assembly->part seems a logical system to use. They do have some oddities, like the clutch mechanism being part of the gearbox while the clutch itself is part of the engine in later books, but even that has some logic as different engines have different clutches with the same gearbox. Remember, we have (bar the odd drop-off) every single part for post 86 Defenders on the site, down to the last washer (Defender Black, anyone? Discovery Mpi?). The major parts, i.e. not nuts and bolts (they are all there, and if you keep an eye out you will see them appearing wherever they are used on every occasion - with a unique description) are "on the right page" as it were. Others list only a fraction of this lot, and hence require far less categories - that's not what we are about. The goal is that every single part ever issued by LR will be on there when I'm done, even the obsolete ones, so that it will form a definitive archive and list of what is, and isn't, available. OK, I'll quite happily admit that the other vehicles are not as complete as Defender, but they will be. It's not going to be this week though! Also "Accessories" has got a bit messy, but as we list more stuff that's pretty much inevitable until clear catagories emerge. A major sort out is queued up to follow the completion of Discovery I gearboxes "some time in the second quarter".......
That has got me confused - "About us" link is on the first page, which is linked to from every parts page.
The phone number is at the the top of every "leaf" page (the ones with actual parts on). Having any more info would result in half the page being repetetive info which is just padding to me.
Well, it's not going to change radically - it can't, theres no other way to organise it that I can see. And, rightly or wrongly, I like my crappy graphics - functional and workman like - just like the product is (was?). I'm always open to suggestions though, in fact the whole structure of the site is the result of customer feed back - "Why can't I......" - both by mail and a couple of other threads in this group. I've even had icons sent (but never a themed, complete set), but they always suffer from three problems - they are drawn to big, they don't have a theme, they are stronlgy influenced by other peoples sites (...make that four problems..), they infringe LR's trade marks (.... ok, five then... ) or they are not memorable/notable/original.

I think he means that on one part of the screen you'd have a clickable line reading vehicle->assembly->sub-assembly->part and you could move to that level by clicking on the relevant part of the line, so if you're in the wrong sub-assembly or need to order parts from a different one, you can click on "assembly" to be returned to the "sub-assembly" list. It's true that you can usually just use the "back" icon on a heirarchically organised site but it does help keep track of where you are. They're more of use on a site that allows you to move from one leaf to another without returning to the parent leaf, e.g. with "next" and "previous" buttons.

Some good advice and ideas in there, duly noted, and even in a language *I* can understand, not being in any way a computer expert, maybe one day.
