Did a Range Rover beat a Porsche in race?

Dec 18, 2003 17 Replies

I've just been told of a recent Jeremy Clarkson TV trial in which a Range Rover beat a Porsche over a standing quarter mile. What make the story almost unbelievable is that the Porsche was on the tarmac but the Range Rover was on the grass!!!!

Can anyone conform this?

Sounds like an Overfinch then...

Can't find it on Google.

Sort of, it was an Overfinch modified Range Rover but I don't remember a Porsche...

Maybe the SLK that they show here...

Wasn't it on Top Gear's last series? I certainly remember them reviewing the Overfinch, and I think that's when they did it.

Tony.

No.

It was a Merc SLK and an OverFinch RR .. But yes, the RR was on the grass and the Merc was on the tarmac .. ;)

It was _well_ impressive .. ;)

There's a video of it somewhere on the BBC website I seem to recall ..

On the other hand the Overfinch Range Rover was the SLOWEST car they have tested on their test ring. Apart from the Lamborghini LM002 which according to them "did not finish because it has run out of petrol and BBC funding does not permit a fill-up"

Take care Pantelis

Thanks for the link Tony. It was still pretty impressive considering the Range Rover was on the grass.

Damn good video. Wasn't too great on the track, but I could probably live with that.

Now thats the engine i need in my 101!... :)

I missed that but ISTR a Range Rover beating another fast car in a runway thrash, and the Range Rover was hooked up to a transporter trailer with a Ford Focus on or something!

Waan't that the one where they took some fast car or the other, gave it a thrash down the 1/4 mile, then put it on the trailer behind the RR and gave it a faster thrash down the 1/4 mile?

That was the Overfinch 630R. Described by JC as "... taking a brand new

4.6 litre range rover engine, and throwing it away. Then taking a brand new Chevy 5.7 litre engine, and throwing most of that away." Rebored to 6.3 litres and lots of other mods. Nice. They showed a 4.0 being beaten off the mark by a F**d F*c*s. Then they had the Overfinch beat the Ford, while towing another one on a trailer.

My reaction (to the wife) was "Mum! Mum! Can I have one? Pleeeasse Mum, Can I? Can I? Pleaaasssse!"

I also loved the into to the new Overfinch. "It'll cost you 45 thousand pounds. Plus another 60 thousand for the range rover to start with".

Slightly more affordable is a 1996 P38A 5.7 litre conversion they are selling for about 16K.
