Bad News?

Hi

Just been sent an email, (from a trusted source) just wondered what collective thoughts were on the matter?

' The new electronic signs on the M6 were switched on this Tuesday. The bad news is that they are rigged with the SPECS speed cameras. This probably applies to all the new signs being installed on the M62,M60 and M56. SPECS is a computer-camera based system. As you go past the sign a digital camera reads your number plate. When you go past the next sign your number plate is read again. The computer 'knows' how far apart the signs are so it can work out your average speed between the two, or three or four. The system is fully automatic and will issue a ticket without any form of human intervention. It does this for every single vehicle that passes.

You will not know you have been caught as the cameras don't flash. They work 24/7, 365 days a year, and theoretically, there's absolutely no limit on the number of tickets that the system can issue.

The whole section of the M6 between Knutsford and Preston is wired, both ways. The system is set to trigger a ticket at 78MPH. (Don't take this as a guarantee) Radar detectors will be of no use as SPECS is entirely passive, there is no laser beam to detect.'

I've received this many times from a "trusted source". Up until now it's been a hoax. The email you have is virtually word-for-word the same but with some road names changed. So it's a hoax, basically.

How trusted is your source?

Sooner or later this may actually happen, but don't lose too much sleep for now.

In article , Alistair writes

A near identical message was circulating about the new signs on the M4. I made a twit of myself by posting it to uk.rec.motorcycles.classic without checking up - it's a hoax.

There *are* SPECS cameras up there though, I've seen them. Google the uk.rec.motorcycles.classic group for the thread, and you'll see some references in a posting from me to web sites with pictures and more detail.

HTH.

I'd be interested to know what people mean by "trusted source", as I've had at least 4 versions claiming to have been forwarded by a trusted source. Are people perhaps being a little too trusting? :)

Is a "trusted source" defined as somebody you actually know? Who was forwarded it by somebody they know... etc.

I'm always slightly amused with those 'Always trust downloads from Microsoft' type tick boxes... Must be fairly simple to write a bit of code to always grey these out...

Hi, I thought this was a hoax when I got it from a colleague but checked on it anyway. It turns out there are SPECS in use at several locations including the M6, although those are only at the roadworks. Check this site for details of all SPECS systems in use.

Unless they bring in a new law that can catch you out for going too slow I ain't going to worry :)

Anyway if I had a seriosly fast motor I would have some seriosly dogy plates, probably Liberian :)

The last three times I've been on the M6 between the M56 junction and the Lake District, it has been so clogged that nothing could have moved faster than about 20MPH anyway! How much longer are those road works going to last?

They have a similar system in some parts of Australia (no hoax) cameras mounted on bridges on the freeways and measure your time over (x) kilometres. I believe they operate over distances of 100 Km or therabouts and AFAIK, are limited to one state (NSW or VIC not sure). Someone told me they are really targeting the interstate trucks more so than private vehicles - who knows? Steve W

mind, in Oz they have deserted straight highways miles long with speed limits, which are, moreover, enforced. seems pretty pointless to me.
