Disco 1 spare wheel

My Disco 1 with alloys has a steel spare. Original AFAIK. I have another Disco 1 that came with steels, but now has RRC alloys. Its been like it for 5 years (I bought the wheels from a bloke on this ng IIRC). I'm faily certain you can use the alloy nuts on the steels, but not the other way around.

I'm sure you're right, which is why I now have a set of both types of nut! What I need to know is, is there any difference in the hubs? I'm sure there isn't, but after almost getting caught with a 500-mile journey on the spare I would like to be sure.

The hubs and studs are the same for alloy and steel. The Discovery I did indeed come with a steel spare. As far as I know the alloy nuts can be used with the steel wheels, on the basis that I don't recall the vehicle being supplied with extra nuts in the tool kit.

The alloy nuts are very different and don't have the right taper - I'd not be happy fitting steel wheels with 'em, meself. Steel nuts on alloy wheels is of course a definite no-no.

not sure there weren't different stud lengths, BICBW.

Range Rover book says alloys have different studs, noted by a slot or triangle on the end of the stud. It further says that early vehicles should only be fitted with alloys provided the studs are replaced to suit. Could well be that discos have alloy-type studs anyway... I'll go an look. Our disco has steel wheels and "steel" nuts, which are just ordinary wheelnuts and nothing like the "alloy" ones.

Ours does indeed have the marked studs, though.

I used the ally nuts with the steel spare for a gentle drive of about 5km to a garage, but they looked so WRONG, sticking out like chapel hatpegs, like something out of Gladiator. I would not have been happy driving all the way back the UK with them. I'm happier with a set of steel nuts in the glovebox.

I don't see that they have enough taper on 'em to correctly locate the wheels. Not that I've ever tried 'em, my disco had an alloy spare.

Hi Richard, you'll be pleased to know that the hubs are the same for both steel and alloys.
