Disco 300Tdi - clutch replacement

Hi,

I'm getting a groaning noise when I put my foot on the clutch, and I suspect the release bearing is going. As the vehicle has done 208000 kms, not bad for the original clutch.

The Haynes manual says take the engine out to replace the clutch. A friend who rebuilds Range Rovers here in Harare says take the gearbox out. One of the independent Land Rover experts says take the engine out.

Anyone here done the clutch on a 300Tdi Disco? Which way would you recommend?

Thanks Graham Carter Harare Zimbabwe

I'm no real Disco expert but I'd say that it depends on the equipment you have to hand. For me I'd be thinking engine - but that's because I have a 2 ton gantry and chain block, so it would be easy. OTOH if you had a 4 poster and Xmission jack....

100's !!

I always take the Gearbox out. Even without a ramp. A trolley jack will do but you have to be very careful not to get squashed if it falls off the jack.

4 - 5 hours on a ramp

4-8 hours on a jack depending on how lucky you are.

Taking the engine out of a 300tdi Disco is a pain compared to the 200.

Good luck

Take the gearbox out. Its much easier. Provided you have got a 4 poster ramp and a gearbox stand. I think you have to be careful though to remove the fan otherwise as you tilt the engine you will stuff it through the radiator, which is not a good move.

I've done two of them so far without a hitch. Also done two TD5 Discos the same way. Bryan.
