Discovery or Range Rover?

Thinking of replacing the 1983 V8 (lpg) Range Rover with something newer and with a better range between refilling, I'm undecided between going for a Tdi Range Rover and a Discovery.

Trying to get a feel for prices, I eventually found how to get online prices without paying for them

which, although it doesn't go quite far enough back for my purposes, threw up an interesting comparison: a 1995 M Disco diesel auto books at £270 more than a comparable Rangey, and the dealer trade-in price in top condition is a whopping £1175 higher for the Disco. Why are Discos so much more desirable, and why do dealers need to make £900 more margin on a Rangey?

I'd be looking at something a bit older, probably K or L, to avoid the complexities of airbags, ABS, and drive by wire, so are there big differences between the two that I may not have thought of? I don't need 7 seats, and I do slightly prefer the Rangey's tailgates to the Disco's door, which strikes me as being likely to be hard to open fully when hitched to a trailer.

Do you need to get it in a garage as height and length could be an Issue with the Disco (don't forget that rear wheel overhang too!).

Apart from that they are essentially underneath the same vehicle it's just down to trim and toys then.

when did the RR become TDi and not VM?

not that the VM is a bad engine, but the TDi is reckoned to be better... the price guide thing in LRO doesn;t specify other than they went to 2.5 in

1989, but that was the newer VM, not the TDi.

better rear seat legroom in the Disco, at the expense of front seat legroom...

1991/92 Changeover

Why ? the last performance figures I read were stacked in favour of the VM , pretty much wipes the floor with the TDi's

Ok so the head gaskets blow now and then if not retorqued as per the service manual but thats not the fault of the engine.

I dunno. The TDi seems well-regarded, and appears to be the engine-of-choice when looking for replacements. The VM isn't supposed to be bad, as I mentioned above. Maybe there's an urban myth about heads?

VM should know a thing or two about diesels, they make an awful lot of 'em, some very big.

Discos probably hold their value because they are practical, less prone to things like tailgate rust, and they are still quite a cool car.

Range Rovers have a reputation for being costly to run, because of the V8s, which probably impacts tdi values as well. The Range Rover is essentially a fast, smooth car, which isn't that well suited to a tdi, so not many people want tdis.

I had a Disco, bought a Range Rover (albeit a newer & more complex one) and now I'm going back to the Disco, for simplicity and practicality.

I would rather have the LT230 (Discovery) over the Borg Warner (RR) transfer case any day. No worries about seized viscous couplers or chain stretch and better off road. Cheaper too to fix.

The RR has better 4-piston vented front brakes and components.

In the US I think the later Discos ('95 or 96 up) got galvinized steel body structures as did the RR2. Not sure if true in the UK, but worth checking into if rust is a worry for you.

My Discovery is an "L reg" 94 and it has twin airbags and ABS so you might have to look at older still to avoid airbags and ABS. GGJ

My Discovery is 'P' reg '97 and doesn't have either Airbags or ABS. It also has manual wind-up windows, so he may have to look at later ones too .. ;)
