E Reg 90 DT - issues!

Hi

My friend recently bought an early 2.5turbo engined 90. The engine has potential issues (as I advised him it probably would before he bought it - being an early 2.5 turbo).

  1. It takes a long time to start (glow plugs all brand new and working)
  2. LOTS and lots of blue/white smoke when it starts. This does NOT go away when it warms up. Seems to be worse at low revs.
  3. The little valve on top of the rocker cover is giving out smoke. What is this valve? No such valve on my 300TDi.
  4. I checked to see if the air filter was blocked - it wasn't there! Instead - LOTS of oil. Wondered if maybe last owner had removed due to it being blocked by oil?
  5. Lots of smoke (same colour as exhaust smoke) coming out of breather hose if you disconnect it. We ran it with the hose from the air filter to the turbo removed at the turbo end - and the vehicle poored smoke out of the wing air intake!
  6. It runs a little roughly at tick over.
  7. The turbo is brand new.
  8. No idea on oil consumption yet as he has only driven it 15 miles since buying it.

Yes, I know that dropping in a 200TDi is a good idea and probably what he will eventually end up doing - but is there anything simple (CHEAP) that could be wrong? I suspect cracked piston or piston ring - but I am hoping one of you can suggest something nicer...! Would be nice to do the 200TDi job on a nice warm weekend in May, not Feb.

Thanks,

Henry, Exeter.

I think you already know the answer Henry. Has he got a bike?

Where are you? I might take it off your hands for spares.... (and help remove it??)

The 'little valve' should most probably connect to the missing air filter.

The white smoke is engine oil being burned, because of 'blow-by' (wear in the cylinders and/or rings as you suggest.

I suspect your friend is only a few dozen miles from a most nasty experience when it starts Dieseling on its own engine oil, rather than DERV. It's a nasty shock when you can't switch the engine off (it happened to me with a TD).

Replace it ASAP, firstly for safety and secondly because the thing is uneconomic to repair, unless you have oodles of time and your own large and well-fitted-out workshop.

I now have the 200TDi and don't regret it one bit.

I will go this route with the 110, though its no where near as bad as the OPs mates. Could do with it lasting another 18 months when youngest starts nursery and I have time to do it.

The fact you have the choice of easily using veg oil too is a bonus as well as the improved MPG.

It happened to me also on an auto 300tdi , without any prior warning what so ever, I had had it serviced 2 days before and brand new rear disks and pads fitted also. I drove it home as normal , gave it a few moments on tick over, switched it and off it went, revved up like it was the end of the world . I remember watching the rev gauge go past 6000 and then everything just got covered in smoke, and lots of sounds of metal in the engine smashing itself to bits. Along with a neighbour running out asking if she should call the fire brigade out as by this time most of the street was under a cloud of burning oil. Oh what a fun day that was. GGJ

That reminds me, I really must check the 710 in mine, the driveway suggests it could be lower than before!

Pretty similar here.

I was on my own at home just after Christmas (2008) and I'd just collected a new loo for the bathroom, intending to fit it whilst 'demand' was slack (they were all at in-laws, IIRC).

She started behaving oddly at junctions about a mile from home: de-clutching made the engine rev up. I thought I might have a stuck throttle cable. I got to the lane behind the house, just turned in (needs several bites as it really is narrow), and she started running away from me. I ran her into the fence at the back of our place (slowly), but made the mistake of de-clutching instinctively, resulting in a bang then silence.

The smoke trail wouldn't have disgraced a frigate at Jutland.

It took all the fun out of fitting the loo...

Hmm, a bit too far, I'm in NW Scotland....

Just to close this thread off and update everyone....

My friend has decided not to drive his LAnd Rover until he drops a new engine in. He is worried that as mentioned in this thread he'll suck oil in and make Toyota's issues look like a walk in the park..!

Instead - he seeks either a 200TDi Disco MOT failure OR a good 200TDi engine ready to drop in. He would rather have the whole car as he seems to have ideas about making some sort of strange Disco/Defender hybrid beast out of the parts...?!!!!! A Defco?

If anyone comes accross an old and cheap 200TDi Disco for sale anywhere in the UK - then please drop me an email at snipped-for-privacy@henrytakeoutmassey.com

You know what to 'takeout' of my email address..!

Thanks for your comments and advice - if you want any DT parts cheap let us know (or a mooring buoy anchor).
