Exmoor Extender Seat Kits.

Hi All

I have been looking at importing (into Brazil) their extender kits (see link below). May they be used to the original LR seats in order to put the 2nd row seats a little back?

Has anyone any experience of these seats or the Exmoor Trim Company? Thanks.

I have tried to get in contact with them, but have received no answer.

Hi Felipe,

I bought a set when I bought some Hi-backs from them.

They do give an extra two inches (50mm) of leg room which is welcome, but also lift the back up a similar amount.

By doing this it opens up a very large gap where the seat back and squab join. My children are always losing stuff down there.

In addition, the squab is only fastened on by two bolts on the front edge. Normally, the back is held down by the seat back, but by using the extender there is no longer this support, so the squab will tilt if someone sits on the front of the seat.

A self tapping screw or two helps, but I prefer designed in solutions over bodges every time.

If you fit Hi-backs, the extenders are required if you need to be able to fold the seats all the way up. However, they are expensive for what they are, especially as they require a certain amount of drilling by the fitter. Nothing difficult, but at that price (GBP100 a set ISTR) I expect things to simply fit straight on.

Hi Mark,

Thank you very much for your reply.

A 4x4 specialist in Argentina Gonzalo Avila did it something similar (please see 1st link above), but I am trying to get more detailed information from him about it, but unsuccessfully.

The images are too small, but it seems to me that this mod does not lift the back and instead it lifts the back of the 1st row by using a structure of a 2nd row seat and puts the 1st row seats a little further too. So they change the 1st and 2nd row seats putting both a little further back and lifting the 1st row seats.

Here in Brazil a firm "Rallye Design" (please see 2nd link above) proposes to change the 2nd row seats, but by doing this the 2nd row seats become fixed and do not fold up the 2nd row seats in order to give more space for luggage. I. e., it solves a problem and creates another one!! You can see their 2nd row seats at the 3rd link above. It costs more than US$ 300, with leather its price almost doubles.

A second Brazilian firm "Antoalde" proposes to put further back just the 1st row seats. I asked them to propose a solution for the 2nd row seats. They said they have tried a lot, but found nothing different than the "Rallye Design" solution. So it solves 1st row seat problems, but not the ones of the 2nd row seats. Cost: US$ 50.

I would like to ask you to check the feasibility of the Argentinean mod versus the one proposed by Exmoor and give me your personal oppinion if you do not mind, because you made the one proposed by Exmoor. Apparently this Argentinean solution may be less costly than any other one and get similar results.

If you can send me by email more detailed information materials and instructions from the Exroom extender kit, I will thank you very very much, too.

Just forget the ones proposed by Brazilian firms I just noted for your information.

Thanking you in advance for your attention and patience.

Usenet copy - have also replied by direct email as requested.

Hi Felipe,

Sorry for the delay, but I was working yesterday.

I have taken some photos of my installation and uploaded them to the web.

It was cold, wet and windy this morning when I took these, so sorry for rushing them!

I have in fact only altered one of the three seats - I was not impressed and so only did the one so we could try it out.

A year later, I'm still not sure!

You can see the bolts that hold the extension to the original fitting - you have to drill a hole in the original part for this.

For comparison,

I have looked for the fitting instructions, to scan and send, but they are nowhere to be found. If I do find them, I'll send a copy on.

Personally, I consider them to be very expensive for what they are, and I'm not impressed with how they fit, leaving that large hole, and they seem less secure. On the plus side, the extra leg room is appreciated by any adults that travel in the back.

On the other hand, I am impressed by the Brazilian Rally seats - they look the business. I'm particularly interested that the backs have more rake than the standard. Mine are too upright - when the children fall asleep it's difficult to support their heads. Those look much better. I assume it's USD300 per seat, not for the set? Very nice.

It's hard to see from the Argentinean page how they achieve the improved leg room - on the front seats it looks like they simply relocate the mounting frame, but I have no idea about the rear.

Good luck!

Mark

Hmmm,

The account I use on Usenet is a valid one - I simply rarely pick up anything from there as it acts as a spam trap. Checked it, and it is working ok.

Try using anything you like at the markpewsey.com domain.

Cheers,

Mark
