A friend of mine is thinking of buying an early Freelander to replace his Suburau (sp). Is there anything to look out for? I seem to remember something about an intermediate drive problem (or something like that)? Also what is best, diesel or petrol. He doesnt do 'off road' driving but needs four wheel drive and may also tow his caravan. Thanks Richard Discovery V8 3.9i
Look for coolant/oil leak - head gasket failure costs around £2000!
TD4 has least problems, if your budget stretches that far...
Post-2000 1.8 Petrol are worth the extra cost over pre-2000...
If a Td4 can be afforded, buy one! I have driven an early 1.8, a 2004 1.8 and a 2004 Td4. The 1.8's aren't spritely and drink a lot. There's also the big 'overheating' issue that has been in the motoring press and watchdog. I find the 2004 model a tad cramped inside as most of the 'new' bits seem to be stuck-on extras, like moving the window switches to the door handle so it digs into my leg! I'm 6'1" tall, but my wife finds it okay. I tow a large 6-berth caravan with the wife's Td4 and it copes really well.
