The handbrake on a Series III doesn't go by wire to the back wheels like on many other cars - it's connected almost directly to a brake drum on the rear drive-shaft, which is just behind the transfer box (and just below the centre seat).

When you pull the handbrake, there's a couple of linkages, which end with a cone-shaped bit being pulled between two wedge shaped bits to force them apart, pushing the shoes out (this all happens inside the drum assembly, so all you'll see is the rod that's connected to the cone).

On the opposite side from the handbrake (passenger side of the vehicle), there is another cone between two wedges, which is the adjuster. What you'll see on the outside is a threaded bit with a square section on the end. You can turn this to adjust the brake shoes.

Hope that helps.

There is a square adjuster on the backing plate on the back of the gearbox/transfer case. Tighten this until it binds, then back off one notch (it turns a quarter turn at each notch). Ideally, do this with the front wheels chocked, and one rear wheel off the ground, and in any case with the handbrake off. While at it, check that there is not signs of oil on the brake - if there are you need to replace the oil seal on the back of the transfer case and probably the handbrake linings. JD
