Guess how much the Jaguar robbing 845tards want.

Right having got Percy through his MOT for the pricely sum of £11 for a brake hose and length of plate to fix a small oriface in the chassis I was well chuffed.....

So much so I took him for a bit of a run and promptly blew a leak in the bottom hose that runs from the engine to oil cooler and carries nothing other than Coolant and could be commonly refered to as a bottom hose. The hose has become pourous.

So I've been doing some ringing around this morning. Having eventually got through to the Local Jag main dealer seeing as no one else seems to stock Jag bits guess how much I was quoted for a replacement....

winner gets a knackered hose. (If I ever afford a new one!). And suffice to say I'll never moan about Landrover prices again....

Oh and it's a 4.2 lump from 1978 if it helps with the guesswork. Further to the frustration when I get one I need to chop it up. They are quite different in so much as one end is about 2.5 inch dia while the other is 1

3/4 inch.

Well I used to pay £300 for an oil change, so I'll open the guessing at £75.

I daren't guess the price of a new hose, but a quick Google threw up:

where there's a fine selection of hoses.

Nope...try again...not even warm

:-(

I'll give you a clue....HIGHER!!!!

I've got one now from a scrappper... had to go 20 miles to get it following one false lead from a bloke who doesn't know what a series III jag looks like. Second hand but as new £5 :-)

Also interestingly I could have got a non genuine one for £35 if I could be bothered to wait and also to shell out that extortionate amount for a hose...no way seeing as I've had to shorten it.

I found loads of top and bottom Jag radiator hoses on-line, all for under $20. Therin lies the catch, couldn't find a bloody thing in the UK unless you wanted to fill in a long winded form.

What is the matter with parts suppliers in this country????? The UK businessman might as well not have heard of the world wide web for all the use they make of it. Why can't they just put their stock on-line for us to choose?

If it wasn't for the shipping, vat and import duties, I'd never buy anything from this country and let them all go to hell. For goodness sake Britain - WAKE UP!!

Sorry, I'll climb down off my soap box now.

Thats £110 plus VAT for 10 inches of rubber tube. I bet they don't cost that much on the space shuttles.

Stupid thing is the vastly but no quite so over priced heat exchanger oil cooler that it fastens to is £75 which in the cold light of day I can now reason with..... even more stupid is the fact the engine and gearbox complete along with radiator and alternator and power steering pump (thats one for another day!) only cost me £50.

Gulp...

Wheeeeeellllllll.......

I still own half of (well, half share) a 1968 Jag MKII Ex Met Police - and have the (non working) radio gear, light and bell, together with lots of documentation about the role it played.

This was a 'project' I and an colleague got some 18 years ago and is still wrapped up in oily rags in one of his garages on the south coast. THE reason for not actually working on the project WAS due to the location, then it was due to 'having other projects', but now, following your enlightening posting, is cost :-(

Having said that, I seem to recall we paid about 150 quid for it - so sat there, it still has to be an 'investment' (well, that's the story Charlotte gets, anyway).

The cost of restoring my 1955 Morris Minor 4 door saloon - split screen, 850cc side valve engine and all the trimmings was...

...165 pounds (yes, ok - 20 years ago) That's an aside, though :-)

The daft thing is I seemed to be caught in no mans land.. the calls I made were to specialists and split into the following catagories

"1978 sir? No we don't do anything that new"

"1978 sir ? No we don't touch anything that old"

"Certainly sir £110 plus vat, would you like it wrapped ?" , thing is this guy called me back as I got his receptionist first who said the line was busy.... when I spoke to him the second time (after I made a further call to him) he said " Oh hello Mr Davies , I've had an Email to call you about a hose"....fer f*ck sake...the receptionists desk is 15 feet from the parts store and he's got an email!!!!! No wonder with efficiency like this the spares cost so much.
