It probably depends on if youve got a 2005 RR Sport or a 1950s series LR.

I did the head gasket on my 1990 Rangie twice.. VM diesel. On the first occasion I was quoted £500 plus for it to be done by the Landrover main Agent "Evans Halshaw" as they were then.

I thought it must be a muther of a job so I bought a workshop manual (£60 incl my model), the parts around £100 all in and a Ford Sierra to run around in (cheaper than hiring a car!) because it must take forever it Landrover quoted that much.

I had it done the first time in one evening!

Second time I did a bit more engine rebuilding, pistions, shells etc and recon Turbo. and I reckon that came in around £500 - £600 for all the bit and engineering work. Engine was fantastic after that, no more Piston slap and ran like new.

Just my experience. If you are hand with spanners then give it a go. You could end up stuck with a snapped or siezed bolt but that is the chance you take.

In contrast Percy (SIIA) cost £40 to sort when he had a 2 1/4 petrol lump.

When my 94 Disco needed a head gasket it cost £300. My local LR garage charges around £29 per hour.

Well, I was once quoted £800 just to skim the head on my old Rover 820 which used the same basic engine as the MPi Disco, so that could be a bargain!

Hi Nige - since you asked - NO - I have no ovaries anymore - they were removed 6 years ago due to a little cancer scare so that can't be the problem - I just had someone warn me about posting on automobile newsgroups with men who don't appreciate women jumping on asking stupid questions. Fine by me, just re-read your original post. It does come across very badly!

We get input from females on here very regularly & no-one has ever taken offence at any 'stupid questions' from male or female poster that I'm aware of. Unless they are really taking the piss etc.

Relax and stop worrying about us. There really is a big cross-section of the world that resides here - the only thing anyone is going to get pissed about is if you keep apologising for something that's a non-event.

Don't believe anything anyone says of that nature. There are plenty of women in this group who have an enviable range of knowledge and experience, to think it's either a 'boys club' or "european" is quite incorrect.

A word of advice, though. If you 'go in heavy' you can expect people to react in a similar manner. Usenet (newsgroups) are a volotile medium, some will be keen to help, others may feel the way you've entered the group is hostile - and throw some back :-)

right Oh I did some sniffing about and came up with

having a look at parts prices maybe its time to go have a word with the shop and ask how they arrive at their figure the hourly rate would be a good starting place -- the gasket set would cost about $100 ( price from Atlantic British New York) plus 2 gallons of motor oil@ $25 per gallon (thats amsoil synthetic) an oil filter and a couple of quarts of antifreeze so in total say $200 ( cant say if extra taxes are due or shipping costs ) I reckon an hourly rate of between $162 and $225 so go on tell me what I have missed out ? $999 for a brand new head??
