Instant gasket stuff - what woudl you recommend??

I am in the middle of replacing the clutch on a SWB series 2a Land Rover - the old one was totally sh*gged after gearbox oil leaked from the joint between the gearbox and the clutch release mechanism cover. This joint should have a gasket and it was missing. I have been unable to locate a gasket through either Paddocks or my local non-franchised parts place (Brookwell) as both say it is now discontinued. (unless somebody here knows otherwise) I'm thus left with the choice of which instant gasket stuff in a tube to use on the joint - what would folks recommend? Something seriously good please as I do not want to have to get back into the bellhousing again in a hurry if I can avoid it

I'll preface this answer by saying I have no idea what I am talking about, but here goes anyway!

When I did the fuel pump on the 101, I used a sheet of gasket paper from the local auto factors and used the old knackered gasket as a template to cut a new one. I then used this, smeared with instant gasket, as a replacement. I had no bother, but the fuel pump was removed about a month later, so it was hardly an extended test.

Don't know if you could do similar with your gasket?

If you know what the original gasket was made from you can get the material from a specialist gasket maker. See Yellow Pages and then use a smear of instant gasket just to make certain. Peter

Get some thick paper or thin card (not the corrugated stuff) take a small ball pein hammer and tap one out using the ball a thin smear of HYLOMAR and the jobs a 'gooddun'

OR you can get proper gasket paper don't know how little you can buy we used to get it on 10m X 1m rolls (a bit much unless your making gaskets for everyone on the NG)

if you don't go with a gasket try Hylomar anyway, blue stuff that never really sets but seals great if the parts are clean will also seal if the bits are not so clean but not as well or you could try WELLSEAL a brown thick liquid, great sealant but sticks to everything like s**t to a blanket I used to used this on Bus semi-auto gearboxes

As an aside, its also good stuff to smear round the inside of water hoses before fitting over the Rad pipes. seems to fill the cracks nicely.

Hi All

Blue Hylomar is in there and I've even got the sodding gearbox bolted back to the engine - many thanks for the advice (I have previously been given the brown paper and ball hammer tip by a Franchised LR Dealer parts chappy (looked like he'd been there years and years) when I tried to get the paper gasket for a 2.25 fuel pump to block mounting - that worked treat that time
