Kenlowe type fans for Tdi engines

Hi everyone i was just wondering on the merits of fitting a kenlowe to my

300 tdi. I know ther popular for the V8's but there doesnt seem much mention for the TDI engine. Are the gains less? I have thought about fitting a electric fan from another car to the tdi as it does seem pointless having the fan run when the engine is cold! Any suggestions on which car to borrow one from? sinlge or double? The disco has Air con so should i consider anything else?

Is your present viscous coupled fan broken or seized 'on'?

Hi Jinx, can't see why you would need a Kenlowe on the 300Tdi. If your existing fan is working well, then leave it.

If you are in the northern hemisphere, and are now going into winter, you could always remove the viscous fan for winter, as the 300 is pretty well cooled by normal driving.

In fact at idle the 300Tdi tends to cool down. I have a heat exchanger for a shower and had to fit a hand throttle to get it to run at about

1400rpm, so the water would be hot enough.

Another alternative would be to fit a radiator blind to reduce the amount of cold air coming across the radiator.

What ever you do suggest you first check your existing viscous fan, as generally they run well, and take very little power to run. Or put another way, removing or replacing with a Kenlowe isn't going to make it a drag racer.

Hello,

I have a 98 300 Tdi, which I bought 2 months ago. Since I took ownership of it, it suufered from very slow warm up, and, when it did heat up, it would cool down as soon as it idled (M25 traffic). I posted a few questions to this group about the problem, and was told very similar things to these, about removing the fan, fitting a radiator blind and all kinds of things. I even took it to the dealer and was told there was nothing they could do, it was just that these engines were designed for use in the desert.

However, with my understanding of cooling systems, over cooling makes no sense at all. So, following my gut feeling, I replaced the thermostsat. Bingo, it now heats up in very little time, and maintains the PERFECT temp, no matter how long it idles or how fast I drive or if the heater is on or off.

So my advice is, check the thermostat.

Sounds like the thermostat to me. It also sounds like your dealer is talking a total load of rubbish. Care to name and shame?

See, I was right!

I haven't as far as i know got a problem with the disco even tho i've only had it just over a month!

The fan is free i think but to be honest i'm not totally sure how the viscous fan is sposed to work?

I was just wondering whether there is any advantage/improvement to be gained by adding a electric fan with seperate thermostat control.

My disco water temp is normally just below half way on the guage with 1-3 miles, i would of thought this was ok?

cheers for the replies
