L.P.G. Freelander 1.8

Hi group was just wandering if any body had any experience with LPG on a 1.8 freelander? or should I just sell it and put the money towards a diesel any advice would be nice, i.e. costings, downsides, savings, etc.

Many thanks in advance

You could sell it and put the money toward a Land Rover*

Costs - probably around 1,000 ukp Downsides - you'll lose whatever space you use to put the LPG tank in. Savings - dependent upon your milage, lots and lots. You'll also feel smug whenever you fill up and the Greenies will love you to ickle bits

I have two LPG'd vehicles, one with a 4.6L V8 the other with a 3.5L V8 The first paid for itself within 6 months :-)

  • sorry, couldn't resist - apologies offered without reservation etc.

Sorry to put a damper on things but.... Didn't I read recently (since Christmas) that our wonderful UK Chancellor has said that there is no reason why LPG should be so much cheaper than petrol and it is his intention to increase the tax on LPG over the next few years until it is on a par with the cost of petrol.

I don't think he actually committed on what the target level of fuel duty was.

You can actually fit a 60 litre tank underneath but it requires removal of the under-floor toolbox.

Possibly, or probably. I've been a little laid-up for the last few days so haven't been paying attention. I would still commend LPG to anyone who may be in the slightest way environmentally inclined.

That actually sounds like very bad news...

he hasn't committed himself, other than to indicate that a rise is likely.

however, it'll piss of quite a bunch of people. from the ones who've just spent a grand getting their pride and joy converted to the ones who've just spent 20 grand installing LPG on their forecourt...

any significant duty hike will gradually make the whole deal not worthwhile, and people will go back to diesels, especially as modern diesels are better than the older ones for performance.

and what's the latest bandwagon oh-so-green technology-of-the-moment? Hydrogen fecking fuel cells. and where does the hydrogen come from?

...

...

that was an official silence. Currently, mostly from fossil fuel sources, by a process that uses energy and doubtless creates CO2. Or from electrolyzing water, using energy. generated by fossil-fuel power plants, or nuclear plants.

H-fuel-cell is *not* the way forward, not yet and maybe not ever. All it does is move the pollution elsewhere and add another stage to the process which may or may not actually help the overall efficiency [1]. And to cap it all, the cost of installing and maintaining a hydrogen-distirbution network on the scale required will make the cost of installing the LPG supply system look puny, I reckon. H is difficult stuff to deal with, leaks from almost anything, sealed or no [2], and requires refrigeration to store any decent sized amount in a confined space. AIUI.

[1] the actual fuel cell is much more efficient than an IC engine, I believe 90% is supposed to be easily obtainable. However, you need commensurate efficiency in your transmission to match it. [2] did you ever do that thing in school putting different gases in balloons, and seeing which was most inflated after a week? It weren;t the one filled with Hydrogen.

Yes, that's why it's bad news. Any politician committing themself is bad enough, but to indicate without giving any details is far, far worse.

It'll certainly piss me off - but not only for financial reasons.

The words were: 'The result is that duty on LPG will 'gradually rise' during the next three years, 'to a level more consistent with its perceived benefits.'

the "perceived benefits" of LPG have been the same for years, to those of us capable of perceiving such things. I reckon it's that there enough people using it now to mean that a duty hike will increase the take by a worthwhile amount, thereby helping fund wars and such. If they actually spent the revenue from roads and fuel on the transport system, we'd *have* a transport system.

The benefits for the older car is clear to see, green wise. The thing is, the modern petrol engine is so clean these days the green arguement for new cars does fall flat.. The whole thing has been played wrong from the start, they should be encouraging the older (less green) cars to convert, this will have a benefit all round. One fact, my current car gives out less emissions on petrol, than it did on log.

Amusing typo :-)

Can I again urge people to take a few moments to write/e-mail their MP.

Couldn't agree more. The vast majority of cars are of the older type. It'll take another 10 years for the "new" engines to work through and see how clean they are then!!!!!!

Just had a quick google for his address, and he doesn't seem to have an easily findable one. (Richard Spring) Don't suppose anyone knows it, or a better way to find it?
