My knob gets stiff when hot (LT77)

Anyone have any ideas?

After a prolonged period of motorway driving, my main gearlever becomes very stiff, to the point that it no longer returns to the centre position and becomes quite difficult to change.

Got any oil in the box?

Start by considering excessive heat generation - is there enough oil, the correct oil? Is the gearbox casing so covered in a layer of mud/oil that cooling is impeded?

I'd guess that you'll find the cause somewhere in the above.

If the gearlever normally moves freely you'll probably have a feeling for whether or not this problem is just the lever ball/socket stiffening up or something deeper into the gearbox. Does the movement stiffen up in both fore/aft and transerse directions? I don't know how that ball/socket is lubricated. Excessive heat could well tighten up the ball/socket movement.

Remember, it uses ATF/AQF, even though it's a manual box. I think engine oil was once recomended in the past too.

Definatley *NOT* EP type gear oil! (Unless it's all you've got and you're miles from civilisation on a bank holiday monday in a desert somewhere.)

Of course, as suggested, it may just bee the lever ball mounting on top of the box stifening when things warm up a bit. It's not lubed from within the box, but under a rubber cover, that might have split and let dirt in?

Regards.
