New S3 Rear Suspension - Shockers are in pain!

Hi,



I'm rebuilding my Series 3 SWB and am having problems fitting a new set of springs and shock absorbers on the rear. I've double-checked all the part numbers and done it exactly as the Haynes + LR Repair manuals describe but the chassis is high and the shockers are still extended. I've stuck a couple of pictures up at

Will it eventually go down with a bit of driving or have I done something wrong? I've got a pair of axle straps (one a bit longer - which is which?) but the distance is too great to fit them. This has been a problem for a while and I'd really appreciate any help.

leave the shacles loose untill you get the body back on, the drive it a mile or so and tighten everything up. whilst its sat on level ground.

the longest one i think is the drivers side.

i shouldnt worry about it too much. you will find things easier to fit once theres some load bearing down on the springs.

The first thing I see is that you have no rear tub. This will make the springs ride higher, as there is no weight on the back. Ditto if you have the engine/gearbox & fuel tank out as well. It's possible that you have the wrong shocks, but it looks unlikely, have you checked the extended length against the original ones?

I think the situation will improve once you have the bodywork on, and have re-seated the springs. You shouldn't tighten the u-bolts and spring bush bolts untill the vehicle is in it's normal unladen state on a level surface.
