Oil on its way to the ECU

All,

Yesterday I discovered oil in the box under the driver's seat in my td5 def. Engine still running fine, and the ECU plugs are still clean (oil drips from the wires that have a low point a bit before the ECU).

Everything I have seen on the Tinternet (and indeed even as suggested officially by LR) is that the wiring loom needs to be replaced for a new one "with improved sealing". Does that indeed help? I have seen reports from people saying that eventually the problem comes back...

Would clean the loom and packing the plug on the engine side with high temperature sealant not do the trick? In fact, changing the socket for a better one is probably the best bet (but probably more difficult).

Cheers,

Fred

Hello Fred,

Same problem here - I do clean the plug every 6 months or so and it doesn't seem to get any worse. I also heard that changing the wiring loom would not help in the long run. Changing and sealing the plug will not help, as the oil is actually running in the cables itself.

Cheers, Daniel

"Improved sealing" is not in Land Rover's vocabulary. The new wiring loom in fact just has an "s-bend" underneath the connection to the rocker housing. Stops the oil travelling down the loom, but not down the wires. There is no improved injector harness.

Best suggestion (that we use in the workshop) - replace the injector harness, but before fitting the new one - fill the back of the connectors with Loctite 5900 or similar engine sealant. Press it in with your finger. Pop the rear cover off the connector which exits the rocker and fill it as well. Be liberal - you don't want the oil getting in. Let it set for few hours before refitting.

Every few months, remove red plug from ECU and pull off the white pin cover. Spray with brake clean or similar and refit.

That's about all you can ever do. It's a design problem - having a connector exiting "downwards" is just asking for trouble.

Thanks for the tip. I'll do that.
