OT: thieving scum (fancy a holiday nige?)

Right, looks like it is my turn to stay up and guard the castle tonight :(

Earlier tonight my sister disturbed a load of lads with torches investigating my landrover (which is parked on my drive).

So now I get to sit by the window all night watching.

Looks like they managed to disable the security light somehow too (it had tripped its switch in the house for the first time ever and it was working fine late last night).

Do you and your mates fancy a holiday Nige?

I dont think it is likely that anybody bar me could get any of my vehicles started since i have enough trouble using them but its not nice knowing someone may try.

Thanks Lee! :)

weve spoken to next door, who said that last weekend (when nobody was in at my house) we had the towns supply of underage drinkers hanging round the back as they have now been moved on from their usual haunts in the high street.

Since the ones my sister saw left on foot, I reckon it will have been some of them who must have decided that my stuff looked interesting.

In which case im not too worried about the car going anyhwere just the contents :(

CPC offer this month, for IP cams for 35 quid. Not bad, and work with ZoneAlarm.

It is a low level light that they disabled as it is inside my carport mounted on a wooden support. It could just be a coincidence - but it has not tripped once over the last few months and it was working at around midnight last night, so its a fairly big coincidence..

Once i had reset the RCD it worked fine so perhaps they just hit it. Will have to experiment and will fix the main lights tommorrow which I have had turned off as the wind was making it stay on and i havnt got a ladder big enough to adjust it with.

its a derv so i should hear it!

Pull off the injector pump solenoid lead Tom and stick the transfer box in neutral as well, I'd loan you Sisqo but he becomes a problem if he gets peckish. Derek

Lighting circuits shouldn't really go through an RCD. In domestic installations I think only the ring main(s) should be protected.

Even better, i've got a socket and a light on the end of the same cable! :p Its all wired through a 13amp plug which then goes through a plug-through RCD. This avoids any of the complicated regulations nowadays on exterior wiring! :)

Stuff that is outside the "equipotental zone" (ie. outside) should though. Ideally external circuits would have their own RCD (or RCBO) in the consumer unit not sharing the single one in a split load CU.

It is certainly portable appliances that cause most trouble and risk not fixed ones. These days the regs state that any socket that *may* be used to power an appliance outside has to be RCD protected. On the face of it this means ground floor rings etc but I powered something outside from my third floor flat...

Wouldn't you be better off running the security light from a fused (3 amp) spur? If the thing is out of normal reach then an RCD is a waste of time - and just creates trouble with false trips. I don't think it's normal to run a fixed installation (like a security light) from a 13amp plug and socket.

Maybe Dave L will comment because he seems to have a better understanding. I'm doing some shed wiring myself now with SWA, singles and galv trunking, so and pointers would be helpful.

Leave it in low box - preferrebly on a hill. With a bit of luck they'll try bumping it! [1]

[1] anyone who's tried bumping a diesel in low box thinking it's in high will know what I mean ;-)

I've occasionally wondered if this "transfer box in neutral" lark is a bad idea, probably better to leave it in low so the thing will move, that way they won't be searching for something amiss and spot the second gear lever. You can then call the police and tell them that it's being driven away "very slowly" ;-)

Mind you one of my uncles had his Matchless motorcycle stolen from his garage in a quiet area near Southampton recently, he could hear them as they drove off. He called the police and they weren't interested, and wouldn't even come out to check the scene at a later date. When he kicked up a fuss they suggested he bring the padlock into the station so they could dust it for fingerprints. What? Another rise in council tax? Marvellous.

Right..... I'm in the mood for this! I was watching a series of programmes about British Sci Fi over the last few days, and they got on to Clockwork Orange. The commentator, or perhaps more acurately the pundit, said that it was about a bleak furure where the youth can do pretty much as they please as no one will stop them (the tramp actually askes to be killed as his world is so awful). I don't think the speaker realised he wasn't talking about the future - Clockwork Orange is a documentary for many people these days!.

I feel better now.....

might just end up with the engine and gearbox removed from the chassis, it depends on how good the engine mountings are.

Ain't you always ;-)

Not so sure about the milk bars with milk dispensed from statues of naked women though!

For most installations this is correct, but If the installation relies on an earth electrode because the electricity board doesn't supply an earth then the whole installation must be on an RCD. Greg
